Titel Schiphol Group to use aviation charges as an instrument to improve competitive position
Bericht Jos Nijhuis, President & CEO of Schiphol Group, has today announced the company’s revised strategy for the coming years. Key focus is the advancement and sustainable development of the AirportCity concept. More than ever before the emphasis will be on maintaining a reliable, efficient and competitive multi-modal hub connecting the Netherlands and the Randstad region to the rest of the world. The core function of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is to connect the Netherlands to the rest of the world. An extensive network of connections from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has proven to be the main reason for Dutch and foreign companies to come to the Randstad region. As such Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the main drivers of the Dutch economy and employment. “It is crucial for the Netherlands – and, more specifically, for the Randstad region – that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol maintains its competitive position. This means that whatever the economic conditions, we will invest in capacity and quality in order to accommodate market demand as soon as it recovers. In this regard Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is positioning itself as ‘preferred airport’ for airlines and passengers alike. Hospitality and customer focus are principles we feel strongly about,” says Nijhuis. ‘Corporate responsibility’ is an intrinsic part of the operations of Schiphol Group and an important element in its revised strategy. Key concepts in this regard are sustainability, innovation, safety and support. Revision of charges As a result of the sharp decline in passenger numbers and cargo volumes, and the expectation that the market will only recover slowly, if at all, in the coming years, Jos Nijhuis announced a reduction in airport charges with effect from 1 April 2009, and a freeze in charges as from 1 November 2009. “We must ensure that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol remains competitive. That means adapting our organisational structure and cutting expenditures. Airport charges for our customers
